Avoiding Exercise Burnout

Most people are very excited when they first begin exercising. Their motivation is high and they strive to reach their highest goals. Then something happens. Maybe they reach one or more of their goals. Or the exercise doesn't seem fun anymore. Whatever the reason, sometimes people get bored with their exercise routines.
It's a natural thing that happens to many people no matter what their activity level. If you are getting bored, here are some things to consider.
  • Examine your goals and make sure that they are short-term and realistic.
  • When you reach a personal goal, relish your success. Celebrating your accomplishments keeps you motivated to continue going forward.
  • Keep fitness fun. Listen to music, dance, or exercise with friends.
  • Try new and different exercises or cross-training for variety.
  • A change of scenery can help. Walk or jog a different route or join an exercise club.
  • Don't try to do too much at once. When people overdo it, they can become frustrated and just give up.
